Families of Mat-Su Central,
The end-of-year sprint is here, and the days are moving fast (even if it’s still threatening winter out there). Friendly reminder that grades for K–11 students are due May 13. As always, check out our full calendar and website for the most up-to-date information, including graduation on May 22.
Celebrating Gena Chastain
This year, we are celebrating the retirement of Gena Chastain, our beloved community liaison for over the past 10 years. Gena has poured herself out in partnership with vendors, support of families, organizing field trips, and creating countless meaningful experiences that have helped make MCS what it is today.
We would love your help in honoring her. If your family has a note, memory, or message to share, please drop off letters or cards at the front office by May 1. We will compile them into a scrapbook for Gena as a small way to say thank you for the impact she has made on our community.
Looking Ahead to 2026–27: Hybrid Learning at MCS
Many of you are already thinking ahead to next year and on-site classes through our Hybrid Learning Academy. We appreciate your patience as we finalize details. Our course schedule is running a little later than we had hoped, but we still expect it before the end of the school year.
In the meantime, here are the most important things to know:
1. Clarity: What is the model?
- MCS remains a homeschool program. Parents are the primary educators, teaching and submitting grades. Advisors will continue to be your main point of contact, regardless of any changes next year.
- Hybrid classes are optional additional on-site opportunities (Additional FAQ here)
- Elementary hybrid classes are supplemental
- High school classes may count for full credit (core or elective)
- Hybrid teachers instruct and grade their courses
2. Access: How will classes and sign-ups work?
We are continuing to grow offerings, especially at the elementary level, while keeping access fair for all families.
- Students may request up to 3 hybrid classes per semester
- Families will request classes (not first come, first served)
- A lottery system will be used if needed
- Final placements will be visible after registration is completed (after July 1)
3. Connection: What about the MCS experience?
MCS has always been more than academics, and that will continue. You can still expect: clubs, activities, educational travel, field trips and experiential learning. Students learn and grow best when they are known, connected, and part of a strong community. Our commitment to those ideals remains the same.

Feedback:
We know this time of year moves fast and brings a lot of change. Our focus is simple: making sure every student is supported and connected. We thrive thanks to the creative insights from our home educators. If you have any ideas for how we can continue to improve our program, please share with us here.
Honored to partner with you,
