Mat-Su Central is a public school in the Mat-Su Borough School District. Originally founded in 1972 to serve students who live in remote locations in the school district, Mat-Su Central has since grown tremendously and is now the largest school in the district, serving well over 2000 students. While traditional school settings require a student to adjust to a predetermined curriculum and schedule, MCS adapts to the specific needs and desires of the students and families it serves.
Mat-Su Central is a school of exceptions, because we believe every child is unique. If kids are distinct individuals, they should also be empowered to learn in distinctly individual ways. Our advisors are all certified professional educators with a wide range of experiences in both traditional and non-traditional settings. Our counselors empower students and families alike, making sure we maintain a trauma-sensitive atmosphere where each child is able to form positive and meaningful connections with their peers and adult role models.
Every family at MCS is partnered with an experienced advisor who works as a liaison between family requests and state requirements, advocating to ensure that each student is properly supported. Each student has access to public education funding, and that allotment may be spent according to the student’s specific needs. Along with a wide variety of online and textbook curriculums to choose from - and freedom of pace at which to complete them - MCS offers an extensive list of on-site courses, clubs, and workshops to encourage social connection and creative learning. Community partnerships are also plentiful, freeing families to self-select when, where, and how to invest in their child’s learning.
As Mat-Su Central School has grown and changed to suit the needs of our students, we continue to maintain personal connection with students and home educators as the “heart and soul” of our philosophy. MCS supports choices in education, and we welcome students and families who are ready to personally craft a new path forward for learning and growing in the Mat-Su Valley.
