Class Description

Lace up your boots and become a backyard explorer of the Matanuska Valley! Each week, we’ll head to a new local trailhead—from the gold-rush hills of Hatcher Pass to the forest paths of the Bodenburg Butte—to discover the wonders of nature. This course is about more than just walking; it’s about discovering the hidden magic of the woods and finding the "explorer’s spark" inside every hiker.

Course Highlights:

  • The "Nature Detective" Perspective: Grab your magnifying glass! We’ll identify local plants, hunt for animal tracks in the mud or snow, and learn the stories behind the rocks and mountains of the Mat-Su.
  • Junior Navigators: Learn how to follow a trail map to lead your team toward the summit or the next big landmark.
  • Weather Wonders: Experience the "Valley Winds" firsthand! We’ll learn why it’s always a little different in the mountains and how to pack the perfect backpack to stay cozy in any weather.
  • Storytime at the Summit: Take a breather with a view. During trail breaks, we’ll listen to and discuss exciting tales of Alaskan animals, legendary explorers, and forest mysteries.
  • Forest Friendship & Grit: Learn the "Hiker’s Code"—pacing yourself on the big hills, cheering on your classmates, and discovering that your legs can take you much further than you ever imagined!

Join us to turn the Mat-Su wilderness into your playground and classroom, where every trail tells a story and every summit earns a high-five.
