Class Description
Lace up your boots and explore the backyard of the Matanuska Valley! Each week, we’ll meet at a new local trailhead—from the steep ridges of Hatchers Pass to the winding paths of the Bodenburg Butte—to build physical endurance and outdoor intellect. This course isn't just about the destination; it’s about the grit it takes to get there.
Course Highlights:
- The "Valley View" Perspective: Learn the unique geography and history of different Mat-Su trails, identifying local flora and geological landmarks.
- Mountain Mapping: Master topographic maps and navigation to track our elevation gain and route progress.
- Weather Wisdom: Analyze Matanuska’s microclimates and weather to understand how "valley winds" and mountain clouds affect our hike and safety.
- Literacy on the Trail: Connect our physical journey to the written word, discussing excerpts from classic adventure literature, survival narratives, and local authors during trail breaks.
- Mental Toughness: Focus on determination—learning how to pace yourself, overcome steep inclines, and support your team when the trail gets tough.
Join us to turn the Mat-Su wilderness into your classroom and discover what you’re capable of achieving, one mile at a time.
