Class Description
This semester long course is designed to meet the official Alaska state hunter education requirements while providing high school students with the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to be safe, ethical, and responsible hunters. Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on activities, and field-based learning, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of firearm safety, wildlife conservation, and outdoor survival.
Students will learn the principles of safe firearm handling, including proper use, storage, and maintenance. The course emphasizes situational awareness, decision-making, and accident prevention. In addition, students will explore Alaska-specific hunting laws and regulations, species identification, and ethical hunting practices grounded in respect for wildlife and the environment.
The curriculum also introduces broader topics such as habitat conservation, the role of hunters in wildlife management, and outdoor preparedness skills including navigation, survival basics, and first aid awareness. Real-world scenarios and practical exercises help reinforce responsible behavior in the field.
By the end of the course, students will be prepared to meet Alaska’s certification requirements for hunter education and demonstrate the maturity and responsibility expected of licensed hunters. This course is suitable for beginners and emphasizes safety, respect, and stewardship above all.
