Class Description
4th and 5th grade
Step away from the screen and into the brush. In this year-round immersion course, we dive deep into the changing face of the Alaskan wilderness. From the first frost to the spring thaw, students will explore the woods of the Mat-Su to understand how local ecosystems adapt to our extreme seasons.
What we’ll do:
- Seasonal Navigation: Master the art of moving through the woods in everything from summer mud to winter crust with activities to keep your heart and mind healthy
- Stewardship: Develop a deep connection to the land through sensory observation, sensory awareness activities, and place-based ecological studies.
- Wilderness Skills: Learn shelter-crafting, and winter safety, water and ice changes tailored to the Alaskan climate.
- The Art of "The Woods": Practice nature enjoyment and education together while learning how to stay warm, dry, and stoked in any weather.
This isn't just a hike—it’s about becoming part of the landscape. Whether we’re foraging in the fall or playing broomball in the sub-zero, you’ll walk away with the confidence to enjoy the Great North 365 days a year.
