Dear Spelling Bee Parents and Students,
Mark Twain quipped that “anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination.” While the irony of this quote should not go unnoticed as spelling bee participants, it is important for us to remember that the love of human language comes through creativity, exploration, and critical thinking. Though, it is our ability to memorize facts and store data that then empowers us to think quickly and critically. It is for these many reasons that I find the spelling bee to be a most wonderful pursuit, and I applaud you on joining the club.
Below you will find five different areas of study and preparation that you may personally subscribe to over these next months. They are by no means an exhaustive list of ideas, so please feel free to use your own methodologies and strategies as well. It is my intent to begin meetings in January for practice sessions and social gatherings as we prepare for the MCS Spelling Bee. These meetings beginning in January are intended to build group camaraderie and excitement before the competition, while the word study is an independent pursuit within the student’s daily learning at home.

Word Club App: Students have a new way to study by downloading Word Club for free in the App Store or Google Play Store. Choose from five spelling play modes and three vocabulary play modes. Track the progress as your student masters the School Spelling Bee Study List and the Words of Champions Study List.
Lastly, I would like to speak to the consideration of your child’s age when determining to enter this type of study and competition. The Bee is open to any MCS student who has not passed the age of 15 nor completed grade 8, but with this said, I have found that social and emotional maturity to handle this competition typically starts in grade 5/6. As you begin to determine if your child is ready and how you will personally implement this study, feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
I wish you great joy and success in this pursuit!
With greatest regard,
Tisha Jones
