Cinema as Art/Advanced Cinema as Art Workshop:

Come and join us as we explore how movies, TV shows, and film are a mirror for society’s greatest fears and obsessions! Students will look at film as an art form and examine the other art forms that come together to make cinema so compelling. Students will learn critical thinking skills and how to analyze film as a modern medium for storytelling, character development, and understanding writer/director claims about what life is like, was like, or should be like. In this course, students will dive into the very intentional art of cinematography to understand the ways directors guide not just the actors and action, but most importantly how it is used to impact and manipulate the audience.

Students will usually meet on campus at Mat-Su Central School, but we will also occasionally meet at the Valley Cinema to watch and analyze double headers (movie times TBA). Show times and other information will be posted on our online Canvas class section as they become available.

Students will complete assignments online through Canvas between class meetings. Writing is a large part of this course. Each film will require a written analysis and will be followed by group discussion. Films to be selected as they come available. Permission slip required for the class. Must attend all sessions for credit. This course can be taken twice and counts as a high school English elective.
